Abstract

At the turn of the nineteenth to twentieth century, with the arrival of the piano and the increasing cultural exchange between China and the West, China has experienced more than one hundred years of exploration and experimentation, gradually shaping a uniquely Chinese piano culture. The piano sonata, as a classic European genre imported to China, has evolved into an “experimental art form.” Its complex and organized structure and broad space for expression become an outlet for Chinese composers in the twentieth century to experiment with technical means and explore instrumental aesthetics, while also exhibiting a unique style of artistic expression characterized by the coexistence of Chinese and Western “dual cultures.” Focusing on three selected piano sonatas—Ding Shande’s Piano Sonata in E major Op. 2 (1946), Guo Zurong’s Piano Sonata No. 3 in C Minor (1951), and Chu Wanghua’s Sonata No. 1 in C-sharp Minor (1981)—this study provides an in-depth musical analysis to discuss their compositional contributions to the development of Chinese piano sonatas while also demonstrating the stylistic trends in the Chinese sonata compositions throughout the twentieth century. Not only do these works represent an era, but they also characterize the compositional processes of that specific time, distinctly illustrating the development of the twentieth-century Chinese piano sonata. Furthermore, this study aspires to provide performers with a broader repertoire choice, promote diversity in concert hall programming, and, in a humble effort, introduce these precious voices, rich in artistic and historical significance—to the world.
