The SASSI (Society for the Academic Study of Social Imagery) conference traces its origins to the SISSI (Society for the Interdisciplinary Study of Social Imagery) conference founded in 1990 by Steve Kaplan and Will Wright. Originally established to explore interdisciplinary themes with annual topics framed as "The Image of (Something)," SISSI became a prominent event, attracting participants and keynote speakers from diverse academic and professional backgrounds. After a successful 25-year run in Colorado Springs, the conference was reimagined as SASSI by faculty at the University of Northern Colorado in 2017. While retaining the thematic focus on "The Image of" and its spirit of collaboration, SASSI marked a transition to a new locale and a broadened scope, culminating in its final gathering in 2020.
