Abstract

Passing the National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) on the first attempt is crucial not only for nursing students but also for nursing programs and employers. Nursing programs’ reputations rest on their first-time NCLEX pass rates for incoming students and for national accreditation (Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, 2023; Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, 2024; Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation, 2021). Also, the United States is experiencing a nursing shortage that could be alleviated by more nurses passing the NCLEX-RN on the first try. This quantitative study aimed to determine whether there is predictive ability between the Assessment Technology Institute (ATI) RN Comprehensive Predictor, ATI Medical/Surgical Exam, pathophysiology grade, advanced medical/surgical grade, NCLEX Prep 1 and 2 Exam scores, and nursing grade point average (GPA) for first-time NCLEX success when incorporating the new Next Generation (NGN) testing platform.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was predictive ability among the ATI RN Comprehensive Predictor, ATI Medical/Surgical Exam, pathophysiology grade, advanced medical/surgical grade, NCLEX Prep 1 and 2 exam scores, and nursing GPA for firsttime NCLEX success when incorporating the new NGN testing platform. The following research question and hypothesis guided this study:

Q1 What is the level of prediction in passing NCLEX NGN on the first attempt using the following predictors: ATI RN Comprehensive Predictor, ATI Medical/Surgical Exam, Pathophysiology grade, Advanced Medical/Surgical grade, NCLEX Prep 1 and 2 exam grades, and nursing GPA?

Q1 What is the level of prediction in passing NCLEX NGN on the first attempt using the following predictors: ATI RN Comprehensive Predictor, ATI Medical/Surgical Exam, Pathophysiology grade, Advanced Medical/Surgical grade, NCLEX Prep 1 and 2 exam grades, and nursing GPA?

H0 There is no predictive ability in passing the NCLEX NGN on the first attempt using the following predictors: ATI RN Comprehensive Predictor, ATI Medical/Surgical Exam, pathophysiology grade, advanced medical/surgical grade, NCLEX Prep 1 and 2 exam grades, and nursing GPA.

The study used logistic regression analysis to identify the strongest predictor variables for NGN NCLEX success. A convenience sample consisted of 47 participants from a small private university in the Midwest who completed their baccalaureate degree in nursing and had taken the NCLEX.

Data were collected from the university with the help of the admissions coordinator and program manager. A binary logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the data since the dependent variable was dichotomous. The study aimed to determine the predictability of passing the NCLEX NGN on the first attempt using the following predictors: ATI RN Comprehensive Predictor Score, ATI Medical/Surgical Exam Score, Pathophysiology Grade, Advanced Medical/Surgical Grade, NCLEX Prep 1 and 2 exam grades, and Nursing GPA.
