Abstract
This thesis examined the creation of emotional tension and atmosphere within my paintings and how narrative supported and invited the viewer to engage with the story my paintings illustrated. Artists like Jerome Witkin and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec also told stories in their paintings, either by filling them with characters or by emphasizing specific activities. My experiences in painting this body of work have been a series of balancing acts: of light and of dark, of the finished and the unfinished, and of intention and intuition. My artwork tells stories I have written about events I have seen or heard, exaggerated and inspected, all with the aim of presenting the beautiful tragedy of the human condition.
