Description

Metamorphosis is a reflection on growth. I created this piece my senior year of high school, during a time when I was experiencing a lot of change and uncertainty looking ahead. I was thinking about myself, who I used to be, and who I was still becoming. The drawing is not a self-portrait, but it is of my younger sister. When I think about who I used to be when I was younger, I am always reminded of her. In the drawing, she is surrounded by butterflies. Butterflies are a symbol of growth and change, and I wanted to incorporate imagery that connected to my theme. The position of her body is also intended to symbolize the posture of coming out of a cocoon and experiencing metamorphosis, similar to a butterfly. Her arms are wrapped around her body, but eventually they will fall, and she will grow her own wings. This artwork relates to the themes of Reflecting Back, Looking Forward, because I am now in a different place in my life, but I can still remember where I was when I created that artwork. I can reflect on what it was like to experience those changes in my life, while still celebrating where I am now and looking ahead. I believe that all artworks are a way of commemorating certain pieces of life, and that was my intention with this piece.
