Description

Professor Annie Epperson is reading The Overstory by Richard Powers. Professor Epperson is a member of the University Libraries Teaching and Learning Department.

Reader statement: “The Overstory nicely ties together biology and ecology with human stories in an engaging way. The human storytelling carries the reader along with characters that are familiar, recognizable folks you might already know. The scientific information is included in such a way as to educate, but without a pedantic approach. I appreciated the chance to learn about different types of trees and the ecosystems within which they are found, as well as some examples of human interactions with said systems, and even individual trees.”

About the book & author: The Overstory is a book for all readers who despair of humanity’s self-imposed separation from the rest of creation and who hope for the transformative, regenerating possibility of a homecoming. If the trees of this earth could speak, what would they tell us? "Listen. There’s something you need to hear." Richard Powers is an American novelist whose works explore the effects of modern science and technology. He has won many awards over the course of his career, including a MacArthur Fellowship and the 2006 National Book Award for Fiction.
