Artist's Biography

Jeanette Casas is a first-generation American-born citizen of Mexican descent. She is an undergraduate student at the University of Northern Colorado pursuing a K-12 Art Education BA with a combined emphasis in fibers and digital fabrication. She is expected to graduate May 2020 and will continue pursuing her career as an arts educator and artist. She is currently working at the Immigrant and Refugee Center as a Little Learners Teacher and is completing her student teaching experience in the Greeley-Evans School District 6.

Artist's Statement

Having been born and raised in the United States in a Mexican household, my work primarily focuses on social issues relating to race, ethnicity, and immigration. Although I take interest in visually representing data, I am also interested in the relationships between abstract numbers and the personal narratives and concepts representing them. I am a research-based multimedia artist whose primary use of materials and color palette is influenced by the conceptual aspect of my work. I first begin by researching a topic or concept I find pertinent in today’s culture. I then select imagery to best represent the concept at hand – often abstracted. My work asks to be engaged with, not only through observation but through participation.
